This seminar will provide the attendee with the most up-to-date information regarding the fascinating and emerging field of oral medicine in pediatric dentistry as well as the field of restorative dentistry in children. The seminar will use case-presentation as the learning and discussion format. The first half of the seminar will cover the entire spectrum of the most common medical issues in children with repercussions in dental treatment. Diseases such as asthma, diabetes, congenital heart disease, autism, ADHD, and several syndromes will be discussed with special emphasis on the dental protocols for the treatment of patients with these conditions in the safest way. The second half of the seminar will cover the entire spectrum of restorative dentistry in pediatric dentistry with special emphasis on new materials available for the dentist.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the importance of the dental management of medically compromised children.
- Learn the most common dental protocols for medically compromised children.
- Understand the indications and criteria for the use of dental materials in the pediatric patient.
- Learn the most updated information about silver diamine fluoride.
Juan F. Yepes, DDS, MD, MPH, MS, DrPH is a full professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the associate dean for graduate education at Indiana University School of Dentistry and an attending at Riley Children Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also a clinical professor at the University at Buffalo. Dr. Yepes received his DDS and MD from Javeriana University at Bogotá, Colombia. In 1999, he moved to the USA and attended the University of Iowa and the University of Pennsylvania where he completed a fellowship and residency in Radiology and Oral Medicine respectively in 2002 and 2004. In 2006, he completed a Master in Public Health (MPH), and in 2011 a Doctoral Degree in Public Health (DrPH) both with emphasis in Epidemiology at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health. In 2008, Dr. Yepes completed a residency program in Dental Public Health at University of Texas, Baylor College of Dentistry. Finally, he completed a residency program and a master in pediatric dentistry at the University of Kentucky in 2012.
Dr. Yepes is board-certified by the American Boards of Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine, and Dental Public Health. He is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Oral Medicine, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Indiana Dental Association, and American Dental Association. Juan is a fellow in dental surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. He is a member of the editorial board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology. Finally, he is the associate editor of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA).
