Sports dentistry is the branch of sports medicine that deals with the prevention and treatment of dental injuries and related oral diseases associated with sport and exercise. Prevention is the key along with maintaining optimal oral health for performance as well as managing traumatic injuries as the occur. However, with a professional athlete, “getting them back in the game” may preclude saving traumatized teeth. This presentation will review cases of dental trauma, preventive measures and options to retain and repair damaged dentitions secondary to the physical impacts experienced in athletic competition.

A professional sport team general dentist and an endodontist will co-present their experiences and knowledge associated with mouth guard fabrication for prevention and traumatic management when athletes experience dental injuries. Many variables come in to play and must be considered based on both science and clinical experience to deliver reliable outcomes and reasonable expectations.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the vulnerability of professional athletes, more specifically hockey players, to oral traumatic injuries.
• Learn preventive measures to reduce dental injuries through mouth guard fabrication.
• Capably manage traumatic orofacial and dental injuries through proven and predictable techniques.

Raymond G. Miller, DDS ’85, is the Head Team Dentist for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. He has also served as a dentist for the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in 2011 and 2018. He is a member of the Academy of Sports Dentistry. Dr. Miller has been in private practice in Lancaster, New York since 1986. For forty years he has served part-time as a member of the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences.

Michael F. Gengo, DDS ’13, is a Buffalo native. He grew up in Amherst and now lives in Orchard Park with his wife, their two children, and two dogs. In his free time, he enjoys playing hockey, golfing, and is a season ticket holder for the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.

After graduating from Canisius High School, he attended Canisius College where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Gengo earned his DDS from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, graduating magna cum laude. He was awarded the American Association of Endodontics Award, presented to a graduating student demonstrating the greatest ability and interest in the field of endodontics. Dr. Gengo was also awarded the Edwin C. Jauch Award which is presented to a graduating student who completed comprehensive cases reviewed by a panel of judges, who determine which of the cases is most outstanding.

Following graduation, Dr. Gengo began his endodontics residency at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. During his residency, he was awarded the Thomas J. Feidt Scholarship, awarded to a post-graduate student from the Western New York area. He completed his residency in 2015, earning his certificate in endodontics. In 2017, Dr. Gengo earned his most noteworthy accomplishment. He became a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Board certification is achieved by less than 25% of endodontists in the United States.

For over a decade, Dr. Gengo has been practicing endodontics full-time in the Buffalo area. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, teaching in the post-graduate endodontics clinic.

He is the past president of the Fonzi Dental Study Club and is a member of the American Association of Endodontists, the American Board of Endodontics, the New York State Association of Endodontists, the Eighth District Dental Society, the New York State Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
