This course was developed by dentists and attorneys with extensive experience in the fields of dental malpractice and risk management in the dental environment in accordance with New York State law and regulations. New York State Dentists who complete this course will be entitled to a 10% discount on their liability premiums for a three-year period from MLMIC Insurance Company. At the end of this course, you will receive a certificate of completion to submit to your malpractice carrier. Upon completion of this program attendees will be able to:
- Be in compliance with State and Federal laws applicable to dentistry.
- Obtain and document a thorough and accurate medical and dental history from their patients.

Kevin A. Ricotta, Esq formed his own law firm in September 2001 to offer high quality legal services to the health care community, as well as to serve its clients in complex and general civil litigation matters in both State and Federal Court. The firm’s attorneys are primarily engaged in the defense of medical malpractice claims, and in the defense of personal injury, product liability, legal professional malpractice, and general negligence matters. Mr. Ricotta has considerable experience in the trial of complex civil cases, having successfully tried numerous cases to verdict. In 2018, Colleen Mattrey became a member of the the firm. Like Mr. Ricotta, Ms. Mattrey has litigated numerous cases to verdict and has counseled physicians, hospitals and nursing homes in various aspects of Health Care Law. Kevin A Ricotta is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers(ACTL). Admission as a Fellow of the ACTL is limited to not more than one percent of the lawyers who are licensed to practice in a state. He has also been selected to the Top Rated Lawyers in Medical Malpractice, Super Lawyers. He has been recognized for his defense of medical malpractice cases by Buffalo Business First and the Buffalo Law Journal. Mr. Ricotta is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a 1982 graduate from Notre Dame Law School. As a law student, Mr. Ricotta was Student Director of the Intern Program in the Cass County, Michigan Prosecutor’s Office, and while still in law school, personally tried several cases to verdict under Michigan Court rules.
In 1982, Mr. Ricotta associated with the Buffalo law firm of Brown & Kelly, LLP and began practicing in the insurance defense field. He became a general partner in 1986. In 1991 he joined the firm of Connors & Vilardo and concentrated his practice in the defense of medical malpractice claims. In 2001, he formed his own firm specializing in the representation of physicians and hospitals in litigation of healthcare claims and proceedings. He has extensive litigation experience and is a lecturer on civil litigation for the New York State and Erie County Bar Associations. He is counsel to the Eighth District Dental Society and frequently lectures on risk management to dentists, physicians and hospitals throughout Western New York and the Southern Tier.
Mr. Ricotta is a member of the Erie County and Northern Chautauqua County Bar Associations, and the Western New York Trial Lawyers Association. He is a former member of the New York State Bar Association and Judiciary Committee of the Erie County Bar Association and has served as Chairman of the Membership Committee. From 2003 to 2012, Mr. Ricotta was a voting member of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation. Mr. Ricotta is admitted to practice in New York State and before the United States District Court for the Western District of New York and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Frederick Wetzel, DDS has a significant background in dental liability insurance and service to his profession. He is a former Director and currently serves as a consultant for MLMIC. Since 1992, Dr. Wetzel has been a risk management presenter, lecturing in New York and nationally. He currently serves as the Dental Section Chair of the Medical Professional Liability Association (MPL).
Fred has held numerous positions at the local, state, and national level in organized dentistry. He is a former Governor and Trustee of the New York State Dental Association. Dr. Wetzel has extensive experience in finance, budget and audit matters.
He is a general dentist practicing for the past thirty-seven years in Schenectady, New York. Dr. Wetzel is a graduate of Union College and New York University College of Dentistry. He is the President of the Niskayuna Community Foundation. His interests outside dentistry are aviation, autos and spending free time at his home on Saratoga Lake.
Fred and his wife Shannon are the proud parents of five children and are expecting their fourth grandchild in July.
